CALM IS A SUPER POWER.
Over the last couple of years, I have been beaten, thrown and abused, not physically but emotionally. I had very little choice except to persevere and to stay very extremely patient. I was told not to speak up or say something back, so I taught myself the Art of Silence.
Being silent showed me so much of the things I used to plainly ignore. I became more observant, empathetic and (a work in progress) compassionate. Silence worked more as a self-reflection rather than a display of defeat. It strengthened my mentality, and my ability to control my thoughts and emotions. Most people now see me as indifferent but really, I am quite a roller-coaster in the inside.
People who knew me before I started working did notice that I've changed, and I tried so much to explain how overwhelming and challenging it was to work with so many different people with different personalities. Working life is hard work. Working life is exhausting and mean, and it takes so much not to want to punch everyone for every time they make you feel small and irrelevant.
I am proud to be this resilient. I feel like I've gone through hell to be where I am now. I can't stress it enough to people how capable I am working under so much pressure and how ignorant I am at stupid snide remarks. I want so much to encourage and tell people who are about to jump into the working world that any time someone tries to bring you down, let yourself really understand that Ignorance is BLISS! There is nothing more powerful than ignoring such people, and then to continue doing your work because you know it's your responsibility. What matters is that you get your job done whether they like it or not. All you need to do in order to take these people down, is TO DELIVER when they think you can't. It's amazing when you can prove people wrong, it's even more amazing if you can prove yourself right.
I really don't ever want you or anyone else to go through what I had to go through but if work is becoming a little too much, take a step back and breathe. Find some quotes on the internet, and write it on a post-it note and stick it on your wall or your cubicle. Let yourself be reminded that Calm is a Superpower.
